Soldeu, Andorra | Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa

At 6,000 Feet in the Andorran Pyrenees

Soldeu is a small mountain village with an unusually large landscape around it.

Set high in the Andorran Pyrenees, it forms part of Grandvalira, the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, where the winter terrain extends across multiple interconnected sectors and the same mountains transform into hiking, cycling and golf territory once the snow disappears.

Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa sits directly within that environment.

Located at approximately 6,000 feet above sea level and at the foot of the Grandvalira slopes, the five-star hotel places skiing almost immediately outside the door in winter while remaining equally connected to the mountains during the warmer months.

For us, that year-round character is one of the property’s greatest strengths.

A winter morning can begin with breakfast and move almost immediately onto the slopes. In summer, the same gondola provides access to Golf Soldeu and the surrounding mountain landscape, while hiking, cycling, via ferrata and other outdoor pursuits replace skiing.

Inside, the experience becomes considerably slower.

The hotel’s suites all face the mountains, the resort contains one of Andorra’s most substantial wellness facilities, and the dining program ranges from traditional Alpine cooking to Japanese cuisine and the country’s only Michelin-starred restaurant.

Sport Hotel Hermitage does not try to separate guests from Soldeu.

Instead, it makes the mountains the central part of almost everything that happens here.

From a Ski Shop to Andorra’s Mountain Resort

The story behind Sport Hotel Hermitage begins with the Calbó family and predates the hotel itself by several decades.

The family’s hospitality roots stretch back to Casa Calbó, which was already welcoming travelers passing between France and Spain in the early 20th century.

The modern resort story began around 1972, when the family opened Esports Calbó, one of Soldeu’s first ski shops.

Accommodation followed.

The Calbó Apartments and the small El Duc hotel-restaurant gradually expanded the family’s role in the village, and approximately 15 years later the original Sport Hotel opened as the first four-star hotel within what would become the wider resort.

Sport Hotel Village, Sport Wellness Mountain Spa and eventually Sport Hotel Hermitage followed.

The five-star hotel and spa opened in 2006, creating the highest-end expression of the family’s mountain hospitality and later becoming the first hotel establishment in the Pyrenees recognized by The Leading Hotels of the World.

That history matters because the resort developed alongside Soldeu rather than being introduced as an isolated international hotel project.

The Calbó family’s businesses grew with skiing in Andorra itself.

For us, that continuity gives Sport Hotel Hermitage a different identity from a purpose-built mountain hotel managed from somewhere else.

The property may be polished, but its roots remain distinctly local.

A Contemporary Interpretation of an Alpine Hotel

Sport Hotel Hermitage combines the visual language of a traditional mountain lodge with the scale and amenities expected from a modern five-star resort.

Wood, stone, fireplaces and warm fabrics create the Alpine foundation.

Rather than pushing that aesthetic toward rustic simplicity, the hotel layers it with more contemporary furniture, polished surfaces, substantial public lounges and large windows that keep the surrounding mountains visible.

The guestrooms follow the same principle.

All of the hotel’s main accommodations are suites, and each includes a balcony or terrace facing the mountain landscape. Egyptian cotton linens, hydrotherapy bathtubs and generous sitting areas make the rooms feel designed for time spent inside rather than simply as somewhere to sleep after skiing.

The resort’s physical organization is also important.

Sport Hotel Hermitage connects internally with the Sport Wellness Mountain Spa and forms part of the wider Sport Hotels Resort & Spa complex, allowing guests to move between wellness, dining and other facilities without treating each element as a separate destination.

The ski infrastructure is similarly integrated.

The Grandvalira gondola sits within the wider resort complex, reducing the usual transition between hotel and mountain.

For us, that is where the design is most successful.

The architecture is not trying to become the attraction.

Its purpose is to make moving between the suite, spa, restaurant and mountain unusually easy.

Choosing Between the Hotel’s Four Suite Categories

Sport Hotel Hermitage currently offers 132 suites across four principal categories, all with mountain views and direct daily access to Sport Wellness Mountain Spa.

  • Junior Suite Deluxe: At approximately 452 sq. ft., this entry-level suite combines a king bed, sitting area, private balcony or terrace, hydrotherapy bathtub and mountain views, giving couples or small families substantially more space than a conventional hotel room while remaining close to the resort’s principal facilities.

  • Junior Suite Premium: Offering approximately 560 sq. ft., this larger category provides king or twin bedding together with a sofa bed, allowing up to four guests to share a more flexible mountain-view suite with a balcony or terrace and the same daily spa access included throughout the hotel.

  • Duplex Suite: At approximately 753 sq. ft., this two-level accommodation separates the sleeping and living experience more clearly, combining a king bedroom, sofa bed, fireplace, mountain views and additional privacy for families or guests planning a longer stay.

  • Hermitage Suite: Measuring approximately 710 sq. ft., the hotel’s top traditional suite category includes a separate living room, king bedroom, large furnished terrace overlooking the mountains and Soldeu ski slopes, hydrotherapy bathtub and separate shower, together with additional benefits including a complimentary minibar.

Guests requiring substantially more space can also consider the adjacent Hermitage Mountain Residences, which form part of the wider Sport Hotels Resort & Spa. Individual residences begin at approximately 1,292 sq. ft., with larger 1,938-sq.-ft. and 2,691-sq.-ft. configurations and interconnected combinations reaching approximately 5,382 sq. ft. for larger families and groups.

For us, the Junior Suite Deluxe already works well for couples spending most of the day outside.

Families will generally benefit from the Premium or Duplex categories, while the Hermitage Suite is the category to choose when the terrace, separate living room and stronger sense of privacy are meant to become part of the stay itself.

For the accommodations photo, we would use the Hermitage Suite or one of the largest Hermitage Mountain Residences rather than a standard Junior Suite, so the section showcases the property’s most aspirational accommodation.

From Michelin-Starred Andorra to Japanese Tasting Menus

Food is one of the most ambitious parts of the Sport Hotels experience.

The restaurants operate across the wider resort, allowing guests to move from Michelin-starred tasting menus to relaxed slope-side lunches without leaving Soldeu.

  • Ibaya: Andorra’s only Michelin-starred restaurant is led by chefs Francis Paniego and Jordi Grau, using contemporary technique to reinterpret Andorran ingredients and mountain traditions through tasting menus inspired by places including the Incles Valley and the principality itself.

  • Koy Hermitage: Developed with guidance from chef Hideki Matsuhisa, this refined Japanese restaurant offers tasting menus focused on precise Japanese technique, premium ingredients, sake and carefully selected wines.

  • Hermitage Tradició: The hotel’s principal mountain-inspired dining room serves breakfast and dinner in a warm Alpine setting, with a menu rooted more directly in familiar regional and Mediterranean flavors.

  • Tradició Grill: Centered on live-fire cooking and grilled meats, this restaurant places quality local and seasonal ingredients at the center of a more straightforward mountain dining experience.

  • Glassbar 1.850: The hotel’s relaxed lounge and bar offers cocktails and creative dishes influenced by the culinary styles of Ibaya and Koy, making it particularly useful for a lighter evening or pre-dinner drink.

  • Sol i Neu Club Hermitage: Positioned beside the slopes, this mountain restaurant serves traditional cooking with panoramic views across the Soldeu Valley and works particularly well for a long lunch between ski sessions.

  • Sol i Neu Pizzeria: A casual slope-facing option serving pizzas, hamburgers and tapas for guests who want something quick and informal during the day.

  • The Villager Tapas & Wine: A lively pub-style venue combines burgers, small plates, drinks and live music in an atmosphere influenced by both Irish and American pubs.

  • La Tofana: Open seasonally during winter, this Italian restaurant focuses on homemade dishes and show cooking in a relaxed mountain setting.

  • La Brasserie: A slope-side brasserie serving grilled meats, tapas and wine in a setting designed for both lunch and après-ski.

For us, Ibaya should be planned deliberately.

It is not simply another hotel restaurant; its Michelin star makes it one of the defining culinary experiences in Andorra.

Koy provides the strongest contrast, while Sol i Neu makes sense during a ski day when returning to the hotel for a formal lunch would interrupt the rhythm of the mountain.

Five Floors of Wellness at 1,850 Metres

Sport Wellness Mountain Spa is one of the main reasons to choose the Hermitage over a conventional ski hotel.

The spa covers approximately 53,820 sq. ft. across five floors and connects directly with the hotel.

Rather than relying on one central pool and a collection of treatment rooms, the facility is organized around different forms of water, heat, relaxation and body treatments.

The hydrotherapy areas include pools maintained at different temperatures, waterfalls, underwater massage jets, hydrotherapy stations and an outdoor component that allows guests to remain connected to the mountain environment.

Thermal facilities include saunas, hammam, contrast showers, aromatic experiences and an ice fountain, while additional floors focus on treatments, beauty and relaxation.

Guests staying at Sport Hotel Hermitage receive daily timed access to the spa circuit.

The facility is reserved for guests 13 years and older, and those between 13 and 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

A 24-hour fitness facility complements the spa, while massages and selected treatments can also be arranged privately.

For us, the spa makes the most sense after time outside.

Three hours of hydrotherapy can feel excessive in a city hotel.

After a full day skiing at altitude, it becomes considerably easier to understand.

Grandvalira in Winter, Golf Soldeu in Summer

Sport Hotel Hermitage changes substantially with the seasons.

Winter is the obvious starting point.

Grandvalira is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, with more than 200 kilometers of connected terrain across seven sectors. Soldeu forms one of the most important access points, and guests at the resort have ski storage, ski-school assistance and direct access to the gondola infrastructure.

Snowmobiling, snowshoeing, winter hiking and other mountain activities provide alternatives for travelers who do not want every day to revolve around downhill skiing.

Summer changes the landscape completely.

The slopes around Soldeu become hiking and cycling terrain, while guided experiences can include via ferrata, trail running, e-bike excursions and longer mountain routes.

Golf becomes another major draw.

Golf Soldeu sits at approximately 2,250 metres, making it the highest nine-hole golf course in Europe. Designed by Jeremy Pern, the par-34 course is reached by gondola and uses the same high-altitude landscape that skiers cross in winter.

For us, the hotel is more versatile than its ski-in/ski-out identity initially suggests.

Winter provides the most immediate reason to come.

Summer reveals just how much of the experience actually depends on the mountains rather than the snow.

Mountain Holidays for Children and Teenagers

Sport Hotel Hermitage is designed to work for families as well as couples.

The wider resort operates three age-specific children’s spaces.

The Baby Club is designed for children from birth to age four and requires advance booking and an additional charge.

The Kids Club welcomes children approximately four to nine years old with supervised games and activities, while the Teens Club is aimed at guests between approximately 10 and 13.

Programming changes with the season.

In winter, activities take place primarily indoors around the ski schedule. During summer, the children’s program moves closer to the outdoor pool and takes advantage of the warmer weather.

Babysitting can also be arranged at additional cost.

Families should note one important distinction: children under 13 cannot enter Sport Wellness Mountain Spa.

For us, that makes scheduling important.

Parents may want to use Kids Club time for the spa, while family hours can revolve around skiing, summer activities, the pool or the more relaxed restaurants.

The Junior Suite Premium and Duplex Suite are the most practical hotel categories for families, while the Mountain Residences make a stronger case for multigenerational groups.

A Mountain Resort That Depends on Its Landscape

Sustainability at Sport Hotel Hermitage is closely tied to the environment that supports the resort.

The hotel publicly emphasizes the use of local and seasonal ingredients, particularly within its dining program, alongside efforts to improve energy efficiency across operations.

That relationship is particularly important in Soldeu because the tourism economy depends on the health of the surrounding mountain landscape.

The hotel’s year-round model also broadens the destination beyond a single winter season.

Golf, hiking, cycling and nature-based summer experiences allow the same infrastructure to support visitors when the ski slopes are no longer covered in snow.

For us, however, this is an area where it is important not to overstate what is publicly documented.

The property discusses responsible sourcing, efficiency and respect for the Pyrenean environment, but it does not currently publish the same level of detailed property-specific carbon, water and waste data that some international hotel groups provide.

Travelers who prioritize specific certifications, renewable-energy percentages or quantified reduction targets should therefore request the hotel’s latest environmental information directly.

Planning for Comfortable Mountain Access

Accessibility at Sport Hotel Hermitage requires consideration of both the hotel and the mountain environment around it.

The property uses elevators internally and connects directly with several resort facilities, reducing the amount of outdoor travel required between accommodation, restaurants and the spa.

However, publicly available information does not provide enough detail for us to confidently describe every accessible guestroom configuration, bathroom measurement or step-free route.

We would therefore confirm specific mobility requirements directly with the hotel before selecting a suite.

The same applies to Sport Wellness Mountain Spa, the gondola, ski facilities and seasonal outdoor activities.

Snow, gradients and high-altitude terrain can change the practical accessibility of a stay considerably even when the hotel itself can accommodate a guest comfortably.

Accessible airport transportation or adapted private transfers should also be arranged in advance rather than after arrival.

Crossing the Pyrenees to Soldeu

Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa is located in Soldeu, Andorra, approximately 1,850 metres above sea level.

Andorra does not have a major international airport, so most international journeys finish with a road transfer through Spain or France.

  • By Air – Barcelona-El Prat Airport: Barcelona is approximately 204 kilometers from the hotel and is one of the principal gateways for international travelers, with the road journey generally requiring around three hours depending on traffic, weather and mountain conditions.

  • By Air – Toulouse-Blagnac Airport: Toulouse is approximately 174 kilometers from Soldeu and provides a useful alternative for travelers arriving through France, particularly when flight schedules are more convenient than Barcelona.

  • By Air – Andorra–La Seu d’Urgell Airport: This smaller regional airport lies in neighboring Spain roughly 44 kilometers by road from the hotel, although its limited flight schedule means it is useful only when available routes align with the itinerary.

  • By Private Transfer: For us, a pre-arranged chauffeured transfer is the most seamless arrival option, particularly in winter when road and weather conditions through the Pyrenees require more planning.

  • By Scheduled Coach: Direct bus services connect Barcelona Airport with Soldeu, providing a practical alternative to a private vehicle for travelers comfortable with a longer scheduled journey.

  • By Rail: Rail travel can be incorporated through stations on the French or Spanish side of the Pyrenees, but the final portion of the journey still requires road transportation into Andorra.

We would keep the arrival evening simple.

The journey into Andorra becomes increasingly mountainous, and by the time guests reach Soldeu there is little reason to immediately begin sightseeing.

Check in, look out toward Grandvalira and let the altitude change the pace.

More Than a Ski Hotel

Sport Hotel Hermitage works because skiing is only one part of the experience.

Grandvalira may provide the most obvious reason to book in winter, but the spa, restaurants and mountain setting are substantial enough to support a stay even when every day is not spent on the slopes.

Summer makes that even clearer.

Golf replaces skiing, hiking routes open across the Pyrenees and the same balconies that overlook snow in January face green mountains several months later.

One winter day might begin on the first lifts, continue with lunch at Sol i Neu and end with three hours in the spa before dinner at Ibaya.

A summer stay could begin with golf at 2,250 metres, move into a hike through the Incles Valley and finish with a long evening on a mountain-facing terrace.

Families can divide time between Kids Club and outdoor activities, while couples can build the stay almost entirely around skiing, wellness and food.

For us, that range is what makes Sport Hotel Hermitage most convincing.

It is certainly a luxury ski hotel.

But its stronger identity is as a high-altitude Andorran retreat built around the Pyrenees in every season.
